Despite his relatively young age, Eldrick "Tiger" Woods is one of the most successful professional golfers of all time.  As of this writing, he is the #1 ranked golfer in the world, and was the world’s highest paid professional athlete in 2008, having earned more than $100 million in tournament winnings and commercial endorsements.

Since turning professional at the age of 21, Tiger Woods has won 14 major golf championships, a feat that ranks him second only to golf legend Jack Nicklaus.  In addition, he has won a total of 71 tournaments on the PGA tour, which ranks third in the history of the sport.  At one time, he held the trophies from all four of golf’s "major" touranments (PGA, U.S. Open, The Masters, and the British Open) simultaneously, something that no other golfer has ever accomplished.

Trained to play golf from the age of two, Tiger Woods was a phenomenon at an early age and appeared on several television shows at the age of three, including one with well-known entertainer and golf fan Bob Hope.  He became the youngest person ever to win the U.S. Junior Amateur title at the age of 15, and went on to win the title a total of three times.

Tiger turned professional in late 1996 and was named the Rookie of the Year by the PGA.  He was also named Sportsman of the Year by Sports Illustrated.  This turned prophetic, as he won his first major title, The Masters, by a record 12 strokes just a few months later, becoming the youngest person ever to win the tournament.

In addition to his golf winnings, Tiger has earned hundreds of millions of dollars through various commercial endorsements for a diverse array of products such as Gatorade, Nike, and Buick.  He is said to be a billionaire.

Tiger is married to Elin Nordegren, a former model from Sweden.  Tiger made headlines in late 2009 for non-golf reasons, as he was involved in a car crash outside of his home on November 27, 2009.  The aftermath of the auto accident, in which Tiger was not seriously hurt, led to numerous allegations of girlfriends, marital infidelity and cheating.  Several women have come forward to say that they have had an affair with Woods and there are rumors of numerous other mistresses and girlfriends as well as a not-yet-confirmed rumor of a Tiger Woods sex tape.  At this time, none of these allegations have been substantiated.  Nevertheless, the scandal seems to have hurt him in the eye of the public and may yet cause him to lose some of his lucrative sponsorships.
